School Zones in Murfreesboro TN
Two separate public school systems serve Murfreesboro. Knowing the difference before you buy can shape your child’s entire educational path. Here is what every buyer needs to know before making an offer.
Why School Zones in Murfreesboro Are Different From Most Cities
Most cities have one public school system. Murfreesboro has two, and the dividing line runs through neighborhoods, streets, and sometimes right through a subdivision. It is one of the first questions we hear from families relocating to Rutherford County. Knowing which district serves your address before you make an offer is one of the most important steps in a school-focused home search.
Important: Zone assignments are based on your exact street address. Not your ZIP code, not your neighborhood name, and not the city printed on your mailing label. When you work with the Turner Victory Team, we look up the zone for every address we consider together.
Dual zoning explained: Some addresses inside Murfreesboro city limits fall in an area where both MCS and RCS serve the same neighborhood. The household may have a choice of which district to attend for elementary school. This depends on current enrollment policies and can change year to year. Always contact both districts directly before making a purchase decision based on school preference.

What Is the Difference Between MCS and RCS?
Rutherford County Schools (RCS) and Murfreesboro City Schools (MCS) are two completely independent public school districts. Which one serves a home depends entirely on the exact street address, not the subdivision name or the ZIP code.
Murfreesboro City Schools (MCS)
Pre-K through Grade 6 Only
- Serves many, but not all, addresses inside Murfreesboro city limits
- Covers Pre-K through 6th grade, elementary only
- MCS students transition to RCS for middle and high school
- Operates 13 elementary schools with its own independent board
- Some addresses inside city limits are zoned RCS for elementary, so zone assignment varies by street address
Rutherford County Schools (RCS)
Pre-K through Grade 12
- Serves all of Rutherford County, inside and outside city limits
- Covers all grades including middle and high school for everyone
- All Murfreesboro middle and high school assignments run through RCS
- One of the fastest-growing school districts in Tennessee
- Multiple high school zones with their own feeder schools
The bottom line for buyers: The only reliable way to confirm a zone is to run the exact street address through the official lookup tool. Never rely on listing descriptions, neighborhood names, or ZIP codes.

Tru DOM to Sell is the total number of days a home was on the market before it sold, counted across every relisting rather than just the most recent MLS number. Tru List-to-Sale compares the sale price to the very first price the seller ever asked, tracked the same way. Standard MLS data resets both each time a home is relisted, which makes homes look fresher and sellers look firmer than they were. Both are proprietary Turner Victory Team calculations, not fields reported by the MLS.
These figures cover homes that sold. A listing that was cancelled or expired without ever selling is not counted here. A home that expired, relisted and then sold is counted once, with its full history, because Tru DOM follows a home across every relisting instead of starting the clock over.
Based on 4,276 closed single family sales across 9 Rutherford County high school zones. Holloway, Central Magnet and the alternative schools are not included because students are not assigned to them by home address.
